One year after he was voted into Parliament on a ticket of the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP), Opposition Leader, Bishop Joseph Atherley, has launched his socialist democratic People’s Party for Democracy and Development (PPDD).
Atherley said that the party would abide by the slogan God, Growth, and Peace.
Atherley, left the BLP soon after it won the May 2018 general election, defeating the main opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP) by sweeping all 30 seats.
Atherley said the political philosophy of the new party seeks to center its policies and governance around the growth and development of the people of Barbados.
“We are a party for the people. We are a party born from the circumstances of national crisis . . . which has a serious threat to our country’s liability,” he said, adding that the party was created on November 1 last year.
He said it was no exaggeration that some Barbadians were already disappointed with the performance so far of the one-year-old BLP government of Prime Minister Mia Mottley.
The party’s symbol is the breadfruit lead and its colour is green and some of the members include opposition senators Crystal Drakes and Caswell Franklyn.
