Government Advances Blue Economy Plans During Bequia Fisherman’s Day
Minister of Fisheries, Marine and Land Conservation and Climate Resilience, the Honourable Conroy Huggins, joined fisherfolk and residents at the Fisherman’s Day celebrations on Bequia on Saturday, 18 July 2026.
Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Godwin Friday also attended the celebrations after paying his respects at two funerals on the island. During the event, Prime Minister Friday and Minister Huggins discussed plans and projects aimed at advancing Bequia’s blue economy and supporting the continued development of the island’s fishing sector.
The celebrations come as work progresses on the rehabilitation of the Bequia Fish Market in Port Elizabeth. The project commenced on 8 June 2026 and is scheduled for completion in January 2027. Once completed, the upgraded facility is expected to provide an improved environment for the handling and sale of seafood, benefiting fisherfolk, vendors and consumers.
The Government remains firmly committed to strengthening the fishing industry as an important contributor to national economic growth. Continued investment in fisheries infrastructure, training, equipment and market access will help local fisherfolk expand their operations, improve their livelihoods and take advantage of new opportunities within the blue economy.
A stronger fishing industry will also support national food security by increasing the availability of fresh, locally caught seafood. This can help reduce dependence on imported food, retain more money within the local economy and contribute to ongoing efforts to lower the cost of living for Vincentians.
The Government will continue working with fisherfolk and fishing communities across the country to build a modern, sustainable and productive industry that creates employment, supports families and contributes meaningfully to the nation’s development.
