The High Commission of Canada has announced a significant investment of forty-four thousand four hundred Canadian dollars to bolster youth development and sustainable economic opportunities in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This funding,
provided through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, is directed toward the Scout Association of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for their project titled SunRise Leaders: Powering Your Future.
The initiative is specifically designed to support vulnerable and at-risk youth by providing them with technical skills, mentorship, and entrepreneurship training. The ultimate goal is to create viable pathways to employment and leadership within the nation’s expanding green economy.
Participants in the program will engage in a structured curriculum that blends life skills development with specialized training in solar technology and business.
The training includes instruction on conflict resolution and building entrepreneurial capacity. This phase will be followed by hands-on experience with solar energy systems, ending in a supervised solar installation project to provide practical, job-ready experience.
By developing a workforce of skilled solar installation technicians, the project aims to help Saint Vincent and the Grenadines meet its renewable energy targets while providing sustainable livelihoods for its young citizens. The program also includes an alumni network to ensure continued engagement, mentorship, and support for participants as they transition into the workforce.
Brenda Wills, the High Commissioner of Canada to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, noted that this initiative reflects Canada’s commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth and creating new opportunities for young people. She stated that by equipping youth with the tools necessary to participate in the green economy, Canada is supporting a more resilient and sustainable future for the region.
This contribution is part of the 2026 to 2027 cycle of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, a program that addresses local needs while advancing international priorities such as peace, security, and climate resilience.
