Minister of Urban Development Benarva Browne said on Sunday that the Port Authority is currently reviewing designs for improvements to the jetty at Canouan.
MP for Southern Grenadines Terrance Ollivierre told parliament in 2022 that while the government is spending over EC$600 million for a new port in Kingstown, wharfs in the Grenadines are in shambles.
Ollivierre has repeatedly called for Canouan Jetty to be addressed. Browne on Sunday said the port is looking at both short- and long-term solutions.
“We’re talking long-term and short-term design solutions because I have visited the Canouan Port and I recognise as everyone else that the current situation needs to be improved.”.
“So they’re actively seeking solutions for the temporary, but they’re also looking for the permanent, and what’s going to be decided as well is whether or not it’s going to be relocated; that’s the Canouan jetty.”
Browne also stated that there has been a recent situation in Bequia because of the number of ferries, where docking has become an issue.
“There have been meetings between the stakeholders reminding them of the rules. That is, if you are not in operation, what should the bed be like? However, there are plans for general improvements throughout the Grenadines”.
