Elvis Bacchus a 32 years old resident from the community of Caruth in the Mesopotamia Valley has been ordered to pay a fine of $400.00 forthwith or face a 4-month jail sentence.
The order was given on Friday December 14th, by District Magistrate Bertie Pompey at the Mesopotamia Magistrate Court after he convicted Bacchus on a charge of unlawful and malicious wounding on Augustus Ryan a resident of Freeland on September 1st, 2018.
The Court heard that on the date in question both Bacchus and his common-law wife were involved in a fracas a liquor and provision shop opposite the Freeland Public Road and it was during such time that Bacchus rushed from the shop armed with an empty Strong Rum bottle and smashed same on the ground which resulted in Ryan who was standing nearby sustaining an injury to his left foot.
Ryan testified that following the incident he questioned Bacchus about his action and Bacchus told him that he was vex and also stated that he can do whatever he want to do and that the bottle should have cut him in his neck. Ryan’s testimony was supported by owner of the shop.
Before imposing sentence Magistrate Bertie Pompey told Bacchus that according to his record that he has several convictions of violence and that he appeared in the witness box acting like a saint which he is not.
