Digital Transformation Project Launched to Strengthen Regional MSMEs

The Small Business Association of Barbados (SBA), in partnership with regional business support organisations and with funding from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), has officially launched the project, Reengineering MSMEs for Growth – Adoption and Application of Digital Solutions to Build Resilience and Global Competitiveness.

The regional initiative aims to strengthen the digital capabilities, operational resilience and competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across five participating countries: Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Recognising the growing importance of digital technologies in modern business operations, the project seeks to equip participating MSMEs with the knowledge, tools and practical support needed to adopt and apply digital solutions, improve operational efficiency and pursue opportunities in regional and international markets.

The Caribbean Development Bank estimates that MSMEs account for between 70 and 80 per cent of enterprises across its Borrowing Member States, contribute between 60 and 70 per cent of national gross domestic product, and represent nearly half of regional employment. Strengthening the capacity of these enterprises is therefore important to the wider economic development and resilience of the Caribbean.

While many MSMEs have established an online presence, opportunities remain to translate digital engagement into increased commercial activity, improved productivity and access to new markets. The project responds to this need by moving beyond general digital awareness to provide practical, needs-based support that enables businesses to identify and implement appropriate digital solutions.

Under the initiative, at least 150 MSMEs across the five participating countries will benefit from digital transformation capacity building, with at least 40 per cent of participating businesses being women-led. The project will also undertake at least 150

Digital Maturity Assessments, execute 15 co-financed matching grants and support at least 50 MSMEs in accessing a region-specific e-commerce marketplace.

The capacity-building component will address key areas of digital adoption, including e-commerce, artificial intelligence, cloud-based technologies, data analytics, cybersecurity and digital tools for operational efficiency. Participating businesses will also receive support in developing individualised digital transformation implementation plans informed by their respective needs and digital maturity.

In recognition of the financial barriers that can prevent businesses from implementing digital improvements, the project will make 15 non-reimbursable matching grants available to eligible MSMEs across the participating countries. The grants will cover up to 90 per cent of eligible costs, subject to a maximum of US$15,000 per grant, with priority given to women-led enterprises.

The combination of digital maturity assessments, capacity building, technical assistance, financial support and access to e-commerce is intended to help participating businesses move from identifying digital needs to implementing practical solutions that support sustainable growth and competitiveness.

Chief Executive Officer of the SBA, Dr Lynette Holder, in highlighting the significance of the project opined that “assisting small businesses to access global markets will of necessity require digital capacity.” She added that the CDB-funded project would help participating firms adopt the digital models required to enhance their global competitiveness, while its regional focus was expected to create opportunities for strategic partnerships among participating MSMEs.

Through this initiative, partnering agencies hope to contribute to a more digitally capable and competitive MSME sector, enabling businesses to improve their operations, reach new customers and pursue growth opportunities beyond their domestic markets.
