- Céline Dion ‘doesn’t have control over her muscles’ due to illness, says sister
Due to stiff person syndrome, Céline Dion “doesn’t have control over her muscles,” according to her sister.
According to Canadian website 7 Jours, Claudette Dion claimed Céline ‘worked hard’ at fighting the illness, but her singing career was questionable. “We and she dream of returning to the stage. In what state? Do not know.”
Dion has had chronic muscle spasms. Dion cancelled tours in January 2022 due to “severe and persistent” spasms. She revealed to supporters in December that she has been struggling with health issues for some time, making it tough to confront obstacles. Unfortunately, these spasms influence every aspect of my everyday life, sometimes making walking difficult and preventing me from singing as well.
In May 2023, she cancelled all further tours due to the ongoing condition, stating that touring can be challenging even when fully recovered. Please know I’m not given up.”
Stiff person syndrome, first diagnosed in 1956, is a rare, incurable, but treatable illness that causes the spinal column and brain to overstimulate muscles and spasm.
Her sister said many people called her charity to support her: “People say they love her and pray for her. She gets so many notes, gifts, and blessed crucifixes.”
Dion, 55, planned to resume her Las Vegas Céline residency and tour. Her debut acting job, Love Again, in May, has become popular since her diagnosis. The Guardian wrote that Dion “is responsible for a conservative 80% of the film’s comedy and the bulk of its charm”.
