The Ministry of Education has encouraged parents of children living north of the Rabacca River to keep their children at home, as torrential rains continue to pound northern St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The SVG Met Office reported on Wednesday that the island will experience three days of precipitation due to the interaction of a tropical wave and a trough system.

In a Facebook posting, the Ministry of Education stated that rivers north of the Rabacca River have become impassable owing to severe weather.

On Thursday morning, social media outlets reported that a minibus had become stranded in a river in Overland while attempting to cross.

There were also reports of flooding in the south-eastern corridor of the island’s Prospect neighbourhood. The flooding of the main roadway in that region of the country stranded passengers for more than an hour.

The SVG Met service in its 72-hour outlook on Wednesday said a south-easterly wind flow is expected to move across the island chain into Friday bringing moisture and showers across SVG from Thursday night into Friday. Model guidance is indicating a further 50mm of rainfall by Friday night.
