Opposition Senator Keisal Peters has strongly criticized the current administration for allegedly tampering with the national Contingency Fund, drawing a sharp parallel between the financial breach and the natural disasters currently affecting the country.
Speaking on Star Radio’s On De Record, Senator Peters highlighted the severe irony that the revelation of the fund’s compromise coincided with the arrival of a destructive tropical wave that triggered severe flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage across communities such as Buccament, Golden Vale, Marriaqua,Ottley Hall and South Rivers.
“The Contingency Fund was set up by the Unity Labour Party (ULP) administration with the requisite legal frameworks to protect it and ensure usage in accordance with the law,” Peters stated. She questioned whether the government is now in any financial position to provide immediate disaster relief to affected citizens after allegedly draining the reserves.
Furthermore, the Senator criticized the administration’s handling of the aftermath, noting that while public servants were expected to report to work despite blocked roads and water outages, the Prime Minister has remained notably silent regarding the disaster estimated damage.
The Opposition ULP has urged all affected citizens to utilize state agencies established under their tenure and to report any lack of assistance from the current government.
