The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica has reaffirmed its support and commitment for the One China Policy and for the peaceful reunification of the People’s Republic of China and the province of Taiwan.
Dominica made this clear following the recent Taiwanese Presidential election.
A statement said the One China Policy has been articulated by the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica since its establishment of diplomatic relations with China in 2004.
Dominica explains this decision is based on international law affirmed by United Nations Resolution 2758 of October 1971, where the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate Government of China, hence China’s membership in the United Nations.
The Government of Dominica said it is widely accepted that the future of Taiwan remains a matter within the internal affairs of the People’s Republic of China. Dominica stated that the Taiwanese Presidential election has always been viewed as part of China’s internal politics and has in no way been interpreted as an act that can lawfully bring about the independence of Taiwan.
“This election is no exception,” according to the statement.
The statement further said Dominica, has at the core of its bilateral relations with the People’s Republic of China, further upheld the principles of mutual respect for the sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China and for the non-interference in its internal affairs.
Dominica has stated that Taiwan, despite any attempt or pronouncement otherwise, remains part of the One China, notwithstanding the results of the January 13, 2024, local government elections.
The statement added that it is on these grounds that since 2004, Dominica has maintained deep and friendly relations with the People’s Republic of China, continues to recognise the One China principle and remains committed to strengthening the bonds of its enduring friendship.
