Outgoing G.G

St Vincent’s outgoing Governor General Dame Susan Dougan delivered remarks during the installation ceremony for her successor, Mr. Stanley Kendrick “Stalky” John, which was characterized by personal warmth, professional commendation, and a reflection on her own historic tenure.

Dame Susan highlighted her close personal bond with the new Governor General, noting that he is her neighbor and that his wife, Maureen, often assists in caring for Dougan’s mother.

She referred to the new G.G by his nickname, “Stalky,” and praised his “distinguished” legal career, specifically mentioning the difficulty of being called to the English bar and his service as a Senator and Member of Parliament.

In passing the torch, Dougan emphasized the qualities necessary for the role. She noted that service to the country requires “patience, humility, good judgment, and love for the common man”.

The former G.G expressed confidence in John’s “thorough understanding” of the complex issues facing the nation and his ability to provide clear guidance.

Dame Susan recounted the significant and often challenging events that marked her own time in office, describing it as “quite an adventure”. Key events she presided over included:

• Two national elections.

• The COVID-19 pandemic.

• The La Soufrière volcanic eruptions.

• The transition of the British Monarchy, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III.

A significant portion of Dougan’s speech was dedicated to thanking those who supported her, including the citizens and the government, staff and security, her deputy, Mrs. Dawn Smith, and the police constabulary who protected her.

Dougan recognized her family (Hugh, Kurt, Brent, and Kimberly) as her “strongest support.” The outgoing G.G offered her fullest support to the new Governor General, inviting him to communicate with her at any time on matters relating to the office.
