Venezuela frees dozens detained during protests against Maduro

In a recent humanitarian development, the Venezuelan government released at least 60 individuals who were jailed during the civil unrest following the 2024 presidential election.

While advocacy groups celebrated these Christmas Day releases, they cautioned that the former detainees may still face legal restrictions on their movement.

Human rights organizations estimate that approximately 900 political prisoners remain in custody following the state’s crackdown on demonstrations against President Nicolas Maduro.

Many of those recently freed were held at the Tocoron maximum-security prison, highlighting the severe conditions faced by those challenging the official vote results.

Families and activists continue to demand full exoneration for all citizens still held for their involvement in the post-election protests.
