Senior St Vincent and the Grenadines opposition MP Godwin Friday is hours away from officially being confirmed as the Leader of the Opposition there.
The letter stating that he had the support of the majority of opposition MPs has been sent to the office of that country’s governor general.
An official at the office of the opposition New Democratic Party confirmed to CARIBUPDATE NEWS that the letter of notice, as well as an accompanying letter in which Arnhim Eustace has formally resigned, were both sent late Thursday.
While Friday has effectively been confirmed as the new leader of the opposition – the position for party leader is to be determined at a special convention on November 27.
One of the NDP Vice Presidents St Clair Leacock has indicated on social media that he intends to contest the position, and is said to have already embarked on an aggressive on-the-ground campaign among likely delegates.
But watchers say that the fact Friday is ascending to the official parliamentary position gives him a special advantage going into the party’s leadership race.
Also on Thursday, the NDP issued a notice that Eustace will hold a special open session for his constituents next Tuesday.
Party sources say Eustace will use the occasion to officially report to his supporters about his decisions and to help paint what he sees as the vision for the party going forward under a new leader.
