At about 2 a.m. last week Saturday, lawmen swooped down on a blue and yellow open boat which had landed several pounds of compressed marijuana on the Windward Jetty in Carriacou.
The marijuana, which was contained in three bags weighed 126 pounds at a street value of $181,440.00, reportedly came from Union Island.
According to the Grenada Informer two of the three occupants of the boat were reported running along the beach with a bag each of the marijuana while the third was in the boat with the third bag. The running pair they pointed out, caused police to discharge a warning shot into the air.
The two men reportedly dropped the bags and took to the water swimming. However, the observers said that as the man left in the boat attempted to head out to sea, the propeller got entangled in seaweed, which caused the boat to stop. The boat with the third bag of marijuana then drifted ashore toward the waiting hands of the officers.
The witnesses said that the incident played like a movie because as soon as they recognized they would be captured, the three men abandoned the boat and began swimming out, the same time another boat arrived from Union Island to their rescue.
Head of the Northern Division of the Royal Grenada Police Force that includes the Carriacou and Petite Martinique Police Stations, says they are aware that Carriacou is being used as a transhipment point for illegal drugs.
“We want those who are continuing with this forbidden practice to know that when they are caught we would take them down and in”, said Stafford.
