A New Year’s Day incident in Bequia serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a celebratory environment can turn into a scene of gendered violence.

Kamal Alves, a 27-year-old Beach Attendant, was recently arrested and charged with wounding a 38-year-old female Chef.

What makes this case particularly disturbing is the transition of a common beverage container into a potentially lethal weapon.

According to investigations, the assault occurred in Port Elizabeth, where the victim—a resident of Mt. Pleasant—was struck in the head with a Guinness bottle. Striking a victim in the head could have led fatal consequences.

The legal system treats the use of such improvised weapons with significant gravity, characterizing the act as “unlawful and malicious”

Alves now prepares to answer the charge before the Bequia Magistrate Court .
