On Monday, the season’s first tropical cyclone formed off the coast of Africa.
This is according to the Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch of the United States National Hurricane Center.
According to researchers, approximately 60 waves are formed across North Africa each year.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1 and ends on November 30. The Atlantic Basin did, however, record its first cyclone for 2023 when a subtropical storm emerged in mid-January, according to the NHC.
AL012023 was assigned as the system ID for this subtropical storm.
The NHC also began routinely issuing the Atlantic Basin Tropical Weather Outlook in 2023 on Monday.
The Tropical Weather Outlook is published annually from May 15 to November 30.
