Multiple villages in Guyana have been inundated by floodwaters that have reached unfathomable heights due to persistent rainfall. Several Guyana settlements have been placed on high alert in what is being characterised as another year of extraordinary rains and flooding.
The Civil Defence Commission (CDC), via the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), has confirmed that at least six villages within the Region are flooded.
Quebanang, Kangaruma, Waramadong, Phillipai, Pappy Show Landing and Mango Landing are all facing varied amounts of water, especially on the farmlands.
Other regions, including Eteringbang and Arau Village, are experiencing rising river levels and are monitoring the situation closely.
Regional assessment teams, coordinated by Regional Chairman Kenneth Williams, are collaborating with the Police and other community organisations to mitigate the impact.
The CDC stated that it will be in continual communication with those on the ground for an extended amount of time to assess what actions should be taken.
Local authorities or the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS) can be contacted at any time at 600-7500 or 226-1114 to report any impacts. Residents across the nation have been advised to take precautions as necessary and to report any impacts at any time.
According to the Hydrometeorological Service, the current rainy season is anticipated to be longer and wetter than usual.
