On Tuesday, 29th September 2026, members of the World Food Day (WFD) Committee travelled to Union Island to distribute seedlings and tree plants as part of activities commemorating World Food Day 2026. The recipients of the donation were the Union Island Secondary School, Celina Clouden Smart Hospital and the Union Island Police Station.
Students of the Union Island Secondary School also benefited from educational presentations delivered by representatives from the Forestry Services within the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation and the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine and Land Conservation and Climate Resilience.
Forestry Supervisor (Ag.), Samuel Harry, introduced students to the Ridge to Reef concept and its importance to SVG’s ecosystem, while Senior Fisheries Assistant, Ernie Bracken, presented on Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs), explaining their role in fisheries and how they can assist fisherfolk in locating and harvesting fish.
These presentations served to provide students with a broader understanding of the relationship between land and marine resources, while highlighting the importance of sustainable management of SVG’s natural environment.
World Food Day is observed annually on October 16, and it will be celebrated this year under the theme “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.”
