Girls High School Tops CSEC Examinations 2018

Preliminary results of the May/June 2018 Caribbean Examinations Council Secondary Education Certificate Examinations (CSEC) were received on August 14th, 2018, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

This year, 2716 candidates were registered. Of these, 1052 were private candidates and 1664 were school candidates.

There were 1647 school candidates sitting 11,839 subject entries in 32 subject areas, from 26 secondary schools. Approximately 74.67% of the subject entries were awarded Grades I — III (the corresponding figure in 2017 was 73.25% and 74.66% in 2016).

This year, 16.82% of the passes were at Grade I level, 37.29% at Grade II and 45.89% at Grade III. Last year’s figures were 11.40% at Grade I, 27.33% at Grade II and 34.52% at Grade III.

There were seven schools which recorded percentage pass rates of 80% or more. These schools are:

Thirteen schools obtained creditable pass rates between 60 % and 80%. These are:

SANDY BAY SECONDARY SCHOOL 62.98%
NORTH UNION SECONDARY SCHOOL 61.20%

The Bequia Community High School (BCHS) and the Dr. J.P. Eustace Memorial Secondary School (DJPEMS) show vast improvement in their performance at the 2018 CSEC examinations.

In 2017, the BCHS recorded a pass rate of 51.26% and the DJPEMS recorded a pass rate of 49.27%. In 2018, BCHS pass rate increased to 76.47% and the DJPEMS pass rate rose to 74.09%.

These figures represent an increase of 25.21% and 24.82% respectively.

The following students had outstanding performance in this year’s exam:

  • Sariah Jackson (Girls’ High School) — sat 16 subjects; obtained 14-grade ones, 1 grade two and 1 grade 3.
  • Kyle Da Silva (Mountain View Adventist Academy) — sat 16 subjects; obtained 15-grade ones and 1 grade two.
  • Delaan Nedd (St. Vincent Grammar School) — sat 15 subjects; obtained all 15 subjects at grade one.

The Ministry of Education congratulates all students and extends gratitude to the Principals, teachers and staff at all schools for their support of the students.

We are cognizant of the fact that outcomes in education are measured, not only in quantitative terms, but also in qualitative terms; therefore, the value added to the lives of all of the students, the top performers as well as those whose performance can be improved, is greatly appreciated.

All Principals continue to work diligently in conjunction with the Ministry of Education in support of their schools’ effectiveness and the students’ success.
