Senior advisor and former SVG Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves has detailed his extensive efforts in global and regional advocacy, emphasising the transition of the reparations movement to a “higher phase” and the need for a coordinated international response to the Caribbean’s economic challenges.
Speaking recently upon his return from St. Lucia, Gonsalves outlined a multi-layered agenda that spans from reparatory justice for native genocide and enslavement to high-level diplomatic negotiations regarding regional economic stability.
Gonsalves, acting as a senior adviser and elder to the Repair Campaign, recently traveled to St. Lucia to engage with the reparations movement and participate in activities alongside CARICOM heads of government.
During this mission, he conducted an interview with The Guardian (UK) to bring international attention to the movement’s progress.
He revealed that the movement is now focusing on socio-economic reparatory justice plans, with a draft plan already submitted to the government of St. Lucia and another in development for St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Gonsalves asserted that the struggle has reached a “higher phase,” necessitating a stronger administrative secretariat for the CARICOM Reparations Commission to ensure professional execution of the global strategy.
