Opposition Leader Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has forcefully rejected claims by New Democratic Party (NDP) activists that Unity Labour Party (ULP) operatives tipped off international media outlets about the Green Hill mass shooting, describing the allegations as “absurd” and “childish foolishness”.
Speaking on radio, Gonsalves addressed accusations circulated over the weekend that opposition members deliberately orchestrated global news coverage of the deadly attack to tarnish the country’s image.
Refuting the idea that political operatives were responsible for the press coverage, Dr. Gonsalves detailed how international media distribution actually functions. He explained that major news organizations monitor regional events through professional wire services, international correspondents, and local reporting, rather than private political leaks.

Gonsalves argued that the NDP administration and Minister of National Security Sinclair Leacock themselves created the conditions for intense international scrutiny. He pointed out that government officials publicly referred to the nation as a “failed state” and overstated the presence of highly organized criminal gangs infusing society.
Furthermore, Gonsalves noted that St. Vincent’s global profile as a “luxury tourism destination”—amplified by millions of dollars in resort marketing by brands like Sandals—naturally attracts global media interest whenever a severe mass shooting occurs involving eight victims.
Major outlets including Al Jazeera, ABC News, Fox News, Yahoo News, the New York Post, and the Daily Mail featured the shooting prominently, specifically juxtaposing the tragedy against St. Vincent’s reputation as an idyllic tropical destination.
Gonsalves criticized the ruling party for reflexively blaming the opposition whenever negative news reaches the international stage.
“When ULP was in office, it was Ralph’s fault. Now ULP is not in office… you say it’s Ralph’s operatives telling people in the world about it,” Gonsalves stated. He urged the administration to stop focusing on political scapegoating and instead address the complex, root causes of gun violence through a unified, all-of-society response.
