Government Admits Failure In Managing The Owia Fisheries Complex

The Owia fisheries complex located in the North Windward constituency which was opened in 2009, may soon have a new owner.

This was disclosed in Parliament last week by Agriculture Minister Saboto Caesar.

In May of 2013, the government admitted they could no longer manage the Owia Fisheries Complex, and as such would outsource the management of the facility.

Last week Caesar told members of parliament that the facility has been advertised for private sector interest and that several companies have expressed interest.

He said the details are being worked out by the Department of Fisheries and very soon there would be a public/ private sector partnership for the management of the compound.

“ The Owia Fisheries Complex Mr speaker is in a state of readiness, the equipment is in good working condition, and a new 1.9-ton Flake Ice Machine installed”.

“ The fuel facilities have been rehabilitated, and has a holding capacity of 2000 gallons of gasoline and 2000 gallons of diesel”.

Speaking at the opening ceremony in 2009, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves in his feature address said careful planning was undertaken to decide the circumstances under which to construct the facility.

“Owia is the second highest fish landing area in the country, producing approximately 2259lbs of fish on a daily average, the project was necessary and viable”, he said.

The Complex was constructed at the cost of $EC 33million and funded by the Government of Japan.
