- Agriculture minister injured after accident in Berbice
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha and his driver, who were injured after a car collided with the vehicle they were in on Sunday, were both treated for minor injuries and discharged from the hospital.
The accident occurred around17:48 hrs on Foulis Public Road, West Coast Berbice (WCB).
Mustapha was an occupant of motor vehicle, PYY 994, driven by Dasrat Debeion.
Police Headquarters said enquiries revealed that the vehicle which is owned by the Ministry of Agriculture was heading west on the public road when motor car, PYY 7716, which was driven east by Delon Campbell, 38, of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, attempted to overtake a black Fielder wagon.
In doing so, Police said the car driven by Campbell ended up on the southern driving lane and collided with the right side of the Agriculture Ministry’s vehicle.
As a result of the collision, Police said Mustapha was taken out of his vehicle and taken to the Balwant Singh Hospital for medical attention.
His driver was taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital.
“The Minister and his driver were both seen and examined by a doctor at the respective hospitals, treated and sent away for minor injuries,” Police Headquarters said.
According to the Police, the driver of the car underwent a breathalyser test but no trace of alcohol was found on his breath. The driver is, however, is in Police custody assisting with the investigation.
The accident was captured on a CCTV camera and the footage has been obtained by the Police.
