Guyana dubbed a ‘world model’ for preserving nature – UK’s Minister of State
As a country with one of the lowest rates of deforestation, Guyana is known around the world for its efforts to protect its natural resources and pristine forests. Guyana has one of the best forest management systems in the world because more than 87% of its land is covered by forests.
Zac Goldsmith, who is the UK’s Minister of State for Overseas Territories, the Commonwealth, Energy, Climate, and the Environment, has said that these efforts are a model for other countries to follow.
Minister Goldsmith said these things while on a two-day trip to communities in Region Nine (Upper Takutu and Upper Essequibo) with the Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, and the British High Commissioner to Guyana, Jane Miller.
The UK Minister said, “You have set an example for the world, and you have also given the world a gift by giving us something on which we can build.”
He told the people there that to fix the problem of climate change, people need to stop mistreating nature and its resources.
“Yes, we need technology, clean energy, clean transportation, and all those other things if we want to solve the problem of climate change. But we will never be able to solve climate change if we don’t fix our relationship with the natural world.
“That’s why what you’re doing here in this community, and also in Guyana in general, is so important. You are the leaders of the world, and you’ve taken care of your nature in a way that most countries, including my own, haven’t,” he said.
