- Journalist, Travis Chase escapes execution attempt on D’Urban Street
On Monday evening, journalist Travis Chase nearly avoided being executed at the crossroads of D’Urban and Cemetery Road in Georgetown.
The terrifying occurrence occurred at approximately 19:30 p.m., marking yet another deadly encounter in Chase’s career. Chase narrated the terrifying episode, remarkably unscathed, against the backdrop of detectives examining the scene for answers and shells scattered. “I’m fine, I’m not injured,” Chase stated calmly during an on-site interview, his calmness a stark contrast to the turmoil that had happened only moments before. He went in the neighbourhood to see his aunt and get a paper.
Chase recalled that as he parked his car, “I told the guy who operates the restaurant just watch the car for me, give me two minutes, I’m coming back.”
“As soon as I stepped out of the car, the gunman open fire,” he said. Chase described the shooter as a lone gunman on a motorbike. He revealed that a police officer who witnessed the incident pursued the gunman, but the offender eluded capture.
When asked about the motive for the attack, Chase stated he didn’t know. “This is not my first assassination attempt. If I had to credit anything to this occurrence, it would have to be my reporting style; it couldn’t be anything else.”
He did, however, mention that this was the first time someone had shot at him. Chase reported that his automobile was set on fire while parked in a government facility near D’Urban Street a few years back. He also stated that a bounty on his head was placed on him several years ago. Chase, undaunted by the near-fatal episode, reiterated his devotion to truth-telling. “I am a journalist who stands up for the truth.” I’m not going to back down or be terrified of this.”
Additionally, Chase remarked that he is not at war with anyone but thanks God that he is alive. Chase also praised the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for their quick response.
The Guyana Press Association (GPA) is demanding a full investigation into the incident .
It is noted that this is not the first time Chase has been targeted by unknown individuals. Chase’s truck was burned in June 2020. In this case, no one was charged.
The GPA is urging authorities to act quickly to bring the criminals to justice.
