Death Toll From Cholera in Haiti Reaches 288
The World Health Organization (WHO) stated on Wednesday that the cholera outbreak in Haiti had now caused 288 deaths.
Additionally, the Haitian Ministry of Health revealed that 12,574 cholera patients required medical care.
Authorities also warned of a rise in suspected cases in this cholera outbreak that was declared at the beginning of October. As of December 6, there were 13,672 suspected cases, of which 1,193 have been confirmed.
In the past two months, cholera has been detected in all ten regions of Haiti. 89 percent of reported cases are in the department of Ouest.
The WHO and the International Coordinating Group for Vaccine Supply (ICG) delivered 1.17 million doses of a vaccine against the disease to the Haitian government.
The vaccine programme will target Cite Soleil, Delmas, Tabarre, Carrefour, and Port-au-Prince in the department of the West, as well as Mirebalais in the department of the Center.
The World Health Organization promotes population vaccination and has advocated for extraordinary hygiene measures to prevent infection. The worldwide organisation encourages water, sanitation and hygiene actions to prevent the spread of the waterborne disease.
