SVG wins again
Last Sunday, the Barbadian and Vincentian communities joined together at the High Wycombe Cricket Club for a spirited celebration of culture, heritage and T20 cricket. The event marked one of the most colourful community meetings of London’s record‑breaking sweltering summer.
Before the match started, the crowd and players observed a one‑minute silence in memory of Sir Garfield Sobers, Barbados’ National Hero and widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time. The tribute set an honourable, thoughtful tone, honouring a sporting icon whose legacy continues to inspire generations across the Caribbean and beyond.
An expansive marketplace of Caribbean food, with cupcakes, sweetbread, cassava pone in abundance along with arts and craft and cultural merchandise welcomed visitors. Among the leading vendors was Tasha Boutiques, owned by Natalie Edwards, whose display featured flags, hand towels, dresses and jewellery representing Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Nearby, the Juicy stall, run by Fiona of Caribbean Trade — herself of Bajan and Vincentian heritage — offered products from both islands, including Juicy, the beloved childhood drink cherished by generations of Caribbean families.
Barbadian cuisine was a major highlight, at Dolphins Food Stall, led by Bajan chef Randolph, serving fish cakes, macaroni pie, rice and peas, mutton, and chicken. The grounds were filled with the unmistakable aromas of jerk pans and barbecues throughout the day.
On the opposite side of the pavilion, P Kitchen catered to both the public and the VIP area with a halal menu featuring fish, chicken, and Bajan favourites. Chef Darren’s fish wrap has become a crowd favourite.
National groups from Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines, together with the SVG Tourism Authority and the SVG High Commission, hosted their own stalls, giving the area an official feel as they shared information and answered national enquiries.
The first aid team, led by Nurse Marcella John, also distributed health information leaflets on topics including prostate cancer, breast cancer and other common ailments.
In the day’s cricket match, St Vincent and the Grenadines defeated Barbados, securing their third consecutive win. The game briefly paused after an announcement about illegally parked cars on a nearby industrial estate, prompting several players to dash off the field to move their vehicles before returning to complete the match — much to the Barbadian team’s disappointment, who had hoped the interruption might bring an early end. Nevertheless, the players returned to finish the job. SVG scored 191 with Barbados reaching a paltry 130 all out.
SVG captain Maxford Pipe. received both the Winner’s Trophy and the Man of the Match award from the High Commissioner for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, His Excellency Mr J. M. Brereton Horne. Earlier, the High Commissioner toured the grounds and spoke during the awards presentation, emphasising the event’s significance for both communities.
An exuberant SVG Acting chairman, Chris Kelly, congratulated his team with a couple of hip‑hurrahs before thanking all participants who contributed to the day’s success.
National Council of Barbadian Associations (NCBA) Chair, Dr Bev Goring, congratulated the winning team, extended commiserations to Barbados and thanked all volunteers, vendors, and supporters for their contributions.
Commentator Jeff Hinds managed the microphone throughout the day, including the raffle, where winners displayed a mix of humour and hidden disappointment.
Bajan Soca artiste Dee Vine delivered an energetic performance in front of the pavilion, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd. Music continued into the evening with sets from DJs Rocky Boss, Crystal Sounds, Korsz and Coolbreeze, bringing the festivities to a lively close.
Once again, the event highlighted the unity, pride, and cultural richness of Caribbean communities in the UK, closing with a memorable celebration in Buckinghamshire’s Vincentian heartland.
