interCaribbean Airways Flight JY634 made an emergency landing in Antigua on March 13 due to a critical engine failure shortly after takeoff, according to sources.
interCaribbean in a statement on March 13, 2024, said minutes after takeoff, the crew of Flight JY634 detected abnormal indications with the left side engine, prompting the captain to shut the engine down and return to Antigua where the aircraft landed safely.
The flight originated from Antigua and was destined for Beef Island in the British Virgin Islands.
According to reports, just five minutes into the flight, the aircraft’s left engine made a loud boom, followed by visible sparks and smoke.
As part of regular safety measures, emergency response teams, including ambulances and the fire department, were dispatched to the location shortly after landing.
The pilot was able to safely land the plane back at the airport, and all 36 passengers on board were unharmed.
Affected travellers were taken back to the Antigua airport and given hotel rooms. According to media reports, the airline has reportedly offered to organise alternate flights for stranded passengers in the following days.
An investigation into the reason of the engine failure has begun.
