Joshua Weinhardt Makes History at Youth Sailing Worlds
In a historic milestone for Caribbean sports, 14-year-old Joshua Weinhardt became the first sailor to represent Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at an ILCA Youth Worlds event. Competing in Aarhus, Denmark, from August 1–9, Weinhardt’s debut marks a significant step forward for the nation’s presence in international sailing.
Following months of intense training and fundraising, Weinhardt faced off against a massive field of 300 of the world’s elite young ILCA 4 sailors. Throughout the regatta, he navigated a wide range of conditions that challenged his technical skill, focus, and adaptability. Weinhardt delivered a solid performance, finishing 252nd overall and securing 101st place in the Under 16 boys category.
A defining feature of Weinhardt’s journey was the opportunity to train and compete as part of an international team. He received direct guidance from Olympic coaches Bruno Fontes, Andrew Lewis, and Eduardo Marques, which proved instrumental in strengthening his tactical awareness, boat handling, and race strategy.
Beyond the competition, the young sailor noted that carrying the “Vincy flag” on the global stage was one of the most meaningful moments of the event. Weinhardt hopes his participation will serve as a catalyst for other young athletes in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to pursue their own dreams in competitive sailing.
He returns home equipped with new skills, lasting international friendships, and a renewed determination to represent his country in future international competitions.
