CHIEF MAGISTRATE INTERVENES IN PASTOR’S CROSS-EXAMINATION
A timely intervention by Chief Magistrate Colin John during a murder Preliminary Inquiry on Tuesday may have halted a controversial line of questioning by defense attorney Grant Connell, averting further public spectacle in a case that has already ignited widespread debate.
The inquiry centers on the April 21, 2026 murder of Roseclair Williams, wife of Pastor Leon Williams. The couple, married on November 11, 2000, had been together for approximately 25 years.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, Connell pressed Pastor Williams on the nature of his marriage, asking, “Did you and your wife have a good relationship?” Pastor Williams replied, “We had a very good relationship.”
The cross-examination took a theological turn when Connell questioned the pastor about his familiarity with specific scripture passages.
Connell asked Williams if he was familiar with Isaiah 14, verses 18 and 19, to which Williams affirmed. Williams stated he applied the words of the 18th verse (“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old”) to his life, and noted that he shared his late wife’s love for the 19th verse (“Behold, I will do a new thing now it shall spring forth, shall ye not know it? I will even make a new way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert”).
Tensions rose when Connell asked the pastor if he had recently become engaged to another woman. After Williams answered in the affirmative and began to elaborate, Chief Magistrate John intervened, demanding to know the relevance of the question.
The Chief Magistrate emphasized that the court’s sole focus is the evidence presented before it, rather than gossip circulating on social media. Following the intervention, Connell declined to explain his line of questioning to the court and stated he had no further inquiries.
The line of questioning follows a recent Facebook post by Candice Gordon Llewelyn, sister of the deceased, who claimed Pastor Williams had announced his new engagement during a church service. The online announcement, coming just four months after Roseclair Williams was killed, has triggered mixed reactions across social media platforms.
