- St Vincent’s Modernized bus station to include retail spaces
- Compensation To Be Paid To Affected Vendors
- Final Drawings For Little Tokyo Revamp Underway
- Kingstown Bus Terminal temporarily moves to Geest Shed
The Kingstown bus terminal (Little Tokyo), which was built in 1987 with Japanese government assistance, will undergo significant renovations beginning in 2024.
Minister of Urban Development Benarva Browne stated on Sunday, when appearing as a guest on the Issue at Hand programme, that the current facility will be changed to incorporate retail spaces as well as a modernised bus station.
Browne stated that the bus terminal will serve both the leeward and windward sides of the island, and that the current leeward bus terminal will be affected.
“As part of the upgrade, we will possibly see the addition of 100+ parking spaces. In terms of what is happening now, there has been data collection on the vendors within the area.”
Browne stated that the Geest shed has been considered as a potential and temporary location for the bus terminal as well as the existing activity at Little Tokyo.
“So in 2024, you will see the relocation of the bus terminal to the Geest shed, and you will also see the payment of compensation to those who will be adversely affected, that is, vendors who are operating in Little Tokyo. And we will begin the necessary demolition and construction, hopefully towards the end of this year.”
Browne on Sunday stated that final drawings for the little Tokyo have begun.
While the surrounding fish market was rehabilitated in 2003 to meet international standards, the bus terminal facilities have received little maintenance in the 37 years since its construction.
