LIAT, heralded as the regional air carrier for nearly 60 years, flew its farewell flight as LIAT 1974LTD on Monday afternoon from St. Vincent’s Argyle Airport.
At 1.55 p.m., flight LIA332 departed AIA for St. Lucia.
LIAT, which has been owned by Caribbean governments for than 50 years, will conclude its present phase as LIAT (1974) Ltd. on January 24.
This decision will result in the regrettable layoff of more than 90 employees, who will not receive their proper compensation. However, assurances have been offered about the company’s commitment to meeting its obligations.
According to one of the few remaining employees, this action is part of the process of forming its successor, the anticipated LIAT (2020) Limited.
Seaforth, the court-appointed administrator, has decided to permanently discontinue all commercial flying activities of the scaled-down LIAT, effective at the end of business on January 24, 2024. This conclusion was made after extensive examination and evaluation of the existing activities. LIAT failed in 2020, resulting in widespread job losses across the region.
