A couple has been granted a total of $90,000 bail, and has been ordered not to harass each other.

The two accused lovers – McCaul Defreitas from St Vincent and Sharlene Maduro from the British Virgin Islands – are jointly charged with common assault.

The court heard that, on October 10 this year, police received a report about a domestic dispute. When they visited the couple’s Fat Hogs Bay residence, each lover accused the other of assault.

The girlfriend reportedly told police that Defreitas punched her in the face. On the other hand, Defreitas accused the girlfriend of attacking him by scratching him with her nails.

Meanwhile, allegations are that Defreitas was searching for an item in his pants pocket. He asked his girlfriend for the item, and an altercation developed.

Defreitas reportedly told police that his lover became aggressive and started to scratch him with her nails.

The court heard that he could not fight back because he was ill at the time. He however held the girlfriend’s hands for her to stop the attack, the court heard.

After hearing the allegations, Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards offered Defreitas $50,000 bail and ordered him to get counselling at the Family Support Network.

The girlfriend, in the meantime, was granted $40,000 bail and also ordered to seek counselling. They will return to court on February 3.
