The Associated Press reports that a 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook New York on Friday morning.
The earthquake struck at 10:23 a.m. ET, roughly eight miles northwest of Bridgewater, New Jersey, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, and shook skyscrapers and buildings in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 is normally considered modest, yet it appears to be one of the largest earthquakes to ever hit New York City.
In addition to New York and New Jersey, the earthquake was felt in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul reported on X that a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck west of Manhattan and was felt across the state. My team is assessing the impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will keep the public updated throughout the day.
CNN interviewed those who felt the earthquake, while Fox News and MSNBC all interrupted their usual programmes to cover the tragedy.
The Empire State Building’s official Twitter account humorously stated “I AM FINE.”
A 1.7 magnitude earthquake struck New York City on January 2 of this year. The earthquake was registered in Astoria, Queens, about 5:45 a.m. Nobody was wounded.
Celebrities and media figures flocked to X to discuss the rare occasion.
“Sooooo, New York City, was that an earthquake or nah?” Former “Daily Show” contributor Roy Wood Jr. commented, and ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon wrote, “We totally just had an earthquake in New York. “Have you felt it?”
Jessica Chastain commented, “Did we just have an earthquake?! NYC,” while Busy Philipps, star of “Girls5Eva,” tweeted, “Not to be creepy, but was there just an earthquake in New York?”
