Martinique and Barbados sign landmark cooperation agreement.
On July 7, 2026, a significant diplomatic milestone was reached as Martinique and Barbados signed a landmark cooperation agreement. The signing took place on the sidelines of the CARICOM Summit, which marked the first time Martinique has taken its seat since joining the organization in February 2025. Serge Letchimy, President of the Executive Council of Martinique, and Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, finalized the deal to strengthen ties between the two Caribbean neighbors.
This agreement represents a major political step for Martinique as it asserts its place within the Caribbean region. The goal of the partnership is to transform regional integration into a practical driver for economic empowerment, development, and cultural outreach. President Letchimy noted that the island is not merely taking a seat at the table but is there to actively build and propose operational, results-driven projects that benefit the people of both nations.
The framework for cooperation is broad, covering several strategic sectors including the cultural and creative industries, education, vocational training, and sport. Additionally, the two nations will collaborate on risk management, health, tourism, fisheries, and the facilitation of trade. These priorities are designed to address modern challenges such as strengthening resilience against climate change and creating new opportunities for the youth.
To ensure the agreement leads to measurable action, specific implementation mechanisms have been established. A Joint Cooperation Committee, co-chaired by representatives from both Barbados and Martinique, will define priorities and monitor the progress of various programs. Supporting this, a Technical Secretariat will handle the daily operational monitoring of projects, and a joint activity report will be produced annually to assess results and resources.
The agreement is set for an initial renewable five-year period, providing a stable and ambitious framework for the future. Through this collaboration, Martinique aims to fulfill its ambition of serving as an active bridge connecting the Caribbean with Europe, the Americas, and Africa.
