In a move to strengthen its presence in Barbados and support local households, the Massy Group officially reopened its redeveloped Massy Stores Supermarket in Worthing on August 10, following a BDS$46 million investment. The flagship store’s reopening coincided with a significant expansion of the company’s affordability program, designed to combat the rising cost of living for Barbadian families.

As part of the launch, Massy Stores Barbados announced it has increased the number of everyday essential items offered at reduced prices from 200 to 300 products. These new prices, which reflect reduced mark-ups on essentials, are scheduled to be visible on store shelves across the island by Monday, August 17, 2026.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, who delivered the feature address at the ceremony, praised the initiative as practical support for households. She specifically highlighted the company’s transparency in pricing through its “Ask Dealia” app, which allows consumers to track value.

The Worthing redevelopment is being executed in two distinct stages to modernize retail infrastructure while maintaining service. Phase One, now complete, introduces a “best-in-class” supermarket featuring expanded product ranges and enhanced convenience for both locals and tourists. Phase Two will focus on significantly expanding parking facilities following the planned demolition of the site’s original building.

James McLetchie, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Massy Group, stated that the investment reflects “enduring confidence” in the region. “This is about building a stronger business that can better serve our customers, create opportunities for our people and continue supporting the communities we serve,” McLetchie said.

The investment is part of a century-long history in the country, dating back to the Barbados Shipping & Trading (BS&T) founded in 1917. Today, Massy stands as one of Barbados’ largest private-sector employers, with approximately 1,600 staff members.

Beyond direct employment, the company has heavily invested in the local supply chain. Over the last four years, Massy Stores Barbados has purchased more than BDS$60 million in local produce to support Barbadian farmers and strengthen national food security.

Jared Wright, Senior Vice President and Country Head of Massy Barbados, noted that the redesign was driven by customer feedback requesting greater choice and better value. “At a time when many families are carefully managing household budgets, improving affordability remains a priority,” Wright added.

The Worthing project is a cornerstone of Massy’s broader Caribbean strategy. This regional commitment was further evidenced in June when the Group broke ground on a new mixed-use development in Houston, Guyana, signaling a continued focus on resilient infrastructure and shared prosperity across the Caribbean.
