In an effort to strengthen the local construction industry against the growing threats of natural disasters and climate change, the Ministry of Housing, Land Management, Urban Development and Informal Settlement hosted a comprehensive Building Code Workshop on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

The event, which took place at the University of the West Indies Global Campus in Kingstown, was aimed at empowering construction professionals across St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The workshop focused on elevating the skills and knowledge of attendees by addressing key industry standards, best practices, and innovative construction techniques.

Operating under the theme, “Practical Application of the Building Code and Guidelines as a means of Building Resiliently,” the workshop provided a platform for professionals to navigate an industry that is constantly evolving. Through a series of interactive sessions led by industry experts, participants explored crucial topics such as building codes and regulations, sustainable construction practices, safety protocols, and project management strategies. The gathering also offered valuable networking opportunities for peers to share insights applicable to their daily fieldwork.

During the event, Dornet Hull, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing, stressed the timeliness of the workshop. She encouraged construction professionals to work together as a team to “build stronger, safer homes for the people in St. Vincent and the Grenadines”. Emphasizing the environmental realities facing the region, Hull added, “climate change is real and we have to understand that building guidelines in the building code are imperative to the resilience of our housing stock when disaster strikes”.

Attendees were also briefed on the latest industry standards by Imran Williams, Senior Building Inspector in the Physical Planning Unit. Highlighting the importance of structured development, Williams noted that “physical planning guides land use and development to ensure sustainable growth and efficient resource use”.
