When seven students from Fancy lost their lives in that tragic Rock Gutter accident on January 12, 2015, the news sent shockwaves across the world.

The impact of that horrible accident spurred many responses from the diaspora communities whether they were Vincentians or Caribbean.

One such diaspora group that responded was the Modern High School of Barbados Old Scholars’ Association (Toronto) Inc. otherwise known as the Modernities Association.

On May 27, 2017, President of the Modernities Association, Trenton Douglas, presented a cheque of One Thousand Dollars (Canadian $1000) to Consul General of St Vincent and the Grenadines Fitzgerald Huggins at its 34th Annual Spring Dinner and Dance in Toronto to assist the Fancy Community with a project in memory of the seven students who perished in that accident.

At the handing over ceremony, President Douglas reflected on the loss to the community of Fancy and wished that the money is spent to remember the students.

“The lives lost will never return to us, but the memories will live on through this project to be identified by the community leaders.

It was easy to convince the members of the board of directors of the Modernities Association to respond to this horrific disaster, and many members to a man felt compelled to respond”, said Douglas.

On July 7th, Consul General Huggins presented the cheque to past president of the Lions Club South, Michael John at Cabinet Room.

Present at the handing over ceremony were area representative Montgomery Daniel and a leading member of the Fancy Community.

The Consulate and the Lions Club South have worked on other projects before including the building of a house at Cumberland for a family whose home was destroyed by flooding in 2013.

Minister Daniel thanked Consul General Huggins and the Modernities Association for its kind donation and consideration even years after the accident.

He promised that the money would be well spent on a project to be decided by the community in conjunction with the Lions Club South.

The Modern High school was founded by Louis Albert Lynch on March 27, 1944.
