AN appeal to Timewatch readers to reveal more about a plaque which was spotted on a Caribbean island has elicited a response.
Terrance Jones came across the plaque whilst on holiday and wondered if anyone would recognise the name.
He wrote to Timewatch to ask, saying: “May I share with you a picture which my wife and I took whilst visiting St Vincent and the Grenadines, one of the Caribbean islands, this time last year.
“I wonder if anyone from Llanidloes recognises the family named on this plaque?”
The plaque reads: ‘To the memory of Mary Lloyd, wife of William Hunt Esq of this island and daughter of the late Thomas Price Esq of Llanidloes, north Wales: the affectionate child, the endearing sister, the devoted wife, the constant Christian:
“This Tablet is placed, and these her virtues and graces are recorded by him who bears them most deeply graven on his bereaved heart.
“Died at the Villa Estate November 2nd 1849. Aged 33 years.”
Timewatch reader Sue Robillard shared the appeal on a local Facebook page.
Alison Bryan responded, saying: “St Idloes baptism records state she and her siblings were baptised in 1830, which was quite late for that time considering she was born on 7 May 1816 – perhaps an indication she might have been born in St Vincent and the Grenadines or the family travelled. The baptism records state the family were living at The Green.”
She also includes a picture of the baptism record which shows Thomas and Martha, Mary’s siblings, were baptised at the same time.
In a later post, Alison said: “I’ve done some more research on this today. Her brother died a couple of years later too. Their father was a JP. Martha married a doctor and lived in New Street, eventually winding up in London.
“There are more children than the ones listed.
“Their mother Ann, her ancestry is originally from Llangurig (surname Howell). Ann’s mother’s maiden name was Marsh.”
