(NYDAILY) – Don Rojas — the St. Vincent and the Grenadines-born journalist whose work in radio, print, public relations, education and other fields — has been a dedicated giver for decades, but he’s getting some help in his fight with cancer.
An international lineup of friends and supporters of Rojas’ — including Prof. Sir Hilary Beckles, the vice-chancellor of the University of the West Indies — will gather for a benefit at Brooklyn’s House of the Lord Church, 415 Atlantic Ave., on May 11, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., to help fund the cost medical treatment for multiple myeloma, an unusually aggressive type of bone cancer.
Rojas’ endeavors have earned him respect across the Caribbean and the U.S. — working as press secretary to the then Grenada Prime Minister Maurice Bishop; director of communications for the NAACP; and executive editor of the New York Amsterdam News; senior adviser to the vice chancellor for communications. at University of the West Indies; and general manager of the Pacifica Radio Network, which includes WBAI (99.5) FM in New York.
House of the Lord Church Revs. Herbert and Karen Daughtry; activist Ron Daniels, state Assemblyman Charles Barron and his wife City Councilmember Inez Barron; and educator Brenda Greene are among the scheduled guests.
