The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is currently tracking two areas of interest in the Atlantic basin as meteorologists monitor a pair of tropical waves for potential development over the coming week.
first area of concern is a broad region of showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.
According to the NHC’s Sunday morning update, gradual development of this system is possible through the early to middle part of this week while it maintains a westward trajectory across the central tropical Atlantic.
Forecasters noted, however, that upper-level winds are expected to become less conducive for development later in the week as the system approaches the Lesser Antilles. Currently, the chance of formation over the next 48 hours is near zero percent, with a low 20 percent chance of development over the next seven days.
A second tropical wave is expected to move off the west coast of Africa early this week. Environmental conditions are forecast to be favorable for gradual development once the system moves over the water.
Meteorologists indicate that a tropical depression could form during the latter half of the week as the system moves generally westward across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic. While the chance of formation within the next 48 hours is near zero, the NHC has assigned this system a medium 40 percent chance of development over the next seven days.
Residents in the Atlantic basin are advised to monitor the progress of these systems as the peak of the hurricane season approaches.
