The House of Assembly has paid deep and affectionate tribute to the late Norma Marshall, affectionately known as “Mama Marshall,” celebrating her life as a dedicated preschool teacher, a pillar of the Seventh-day Adventist faith, and an exemplary community leader in Chateaubelair and the wider North Leeward constituency.
Members of Parliament from both sides of the aisle rose to express their condolences and share moving reflections on a woman described as a “rose” who exuded grace, steadfastness, and selfless service.
In a heartfelt tribute, Senator James remembered Norma Marshall as “a rose from Barracks in Chateaubelair,” describing her as a devoted Christian woman of the Seventh-day Adventist faith and a local leader whose very presence commanded respect and admiration.
“She was a community leader, a woman who exuded grace,” Senator James told the House. “When you saw her, there is so much you can think of to describe this wonderful community woman.”
He noted that her quiet strength and gentle demeanor made her a comforting figure for many in her neighborhood and across the constituency, serving as a beacon of advice, wisdom, and steadfast discipline.
Norma Marshall’s contributions to North Leeward were deeply rooted in her career as an early childhood educator. As a preschool teacher, her classroom was not merely a school but a sanctuary of care.
“She raised not just her own children, but she raised a lot of children whom all of Chateaubelair are entirely grateful for,” Senator James remarked. “All of the students who went through her preschool were in her care. They were like children; she was a mother to them.”
Described as very unassuming, calm, and highly disciplined, her service was said to have extended far beyond her local town. Her dedication to early childhood development and community care took her beyond the boundaries of North Leeward, impacting families across various parts of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The tributes in the House highlighted the profound impact of Norma Marshall’s family on the civic life of the nation.
The Minister of Tourism, Kishore Shallow expressed his deep sympathies to the family, noting his close personal bond with her son. “Miss Marshall is the mother of my good friend Sehon Marshall, who I’m sure we all are very familiar with,” the Minister said, extending condolences to him, former Senator Morgan, and the entire grieving family.
The Leader of the Opposition also joined in mourning the loss, expressing his personal sadness over the passing of his “dear friend Mama Marshall” and stating that all of North Leeward was in mourning following her transition.
As parliamentarians reflected on her life, they agreed that her passing leaves a profound void in the social fabric of Chateaubelair and North Leeward. She was remembered as a local leader who combined deep spiritual conviction with active community care.
Senator James closed his tribute by noting that her wisdom and guidance would be sorely missed by those who relied on her counsel. “She would be entirely missed by her family, but more so missed by the people of Chateaubelair who looked up to her as a local leader. Her advice and wisdom, her care and concern will obviously be missed, and a void will be there.”
