Troumaca, Petit Bordel youth embrace empowerment

Scores of young men from the Troumaca Ontario Secondary School and Petit Bordel Secondary School gathered at the Eden Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church in Spring Village on May 29, 2026, for a dynamic and thought-provoking Boys Empowerment Conference hosted by the North Leeward District of the SVG Seventh-day Adventist Mission.

The conference, organized under the leadership of District Pastor Jamel Providence, sought to inspire young men to embrace positive values, make wise decisions, and develop into responsible leaders within their communities.

One of the highlights of the conference was an engaging presentation by Police Officer Steven Billy, who spoke to the young men about the dangers of drugs and violence. Drawing on his experience in law enforcement, Officer Billy shared practical examples of how poor decisions can lead to serious legal consequences, damaged relationships, and missed opportunities.

He emphasized that involvement in drugs and criminal activity often begins with seemingly small choices but can quickly escalate into life-altering situations. Encouraging the students to think carefully about their future, he challenged them to resist peer pressure, choose positive influences, and embrace values such as discipline, respect, and personal responsibility. His message served as a powerful reminder that the decisions made today can shape the course of their lives tomorrow.

Adding a unique and memorable dimension to the programme was a dramatic monologue performed by Pastor Providence. Transforming himself into a fictional vagrant named “Mr. Va Grant,” the pastor vividly portrayed the struggles and hardships faced by individuals who fail to take advantage of educational opportunities and become entangled in destructive lifestyles.

Through the realistic portrayal, Mr. Va Grant shared stories of disappointment, regret, loneliness, and lost potential. The performance captivated the audience as the character reflected on how poor decisions, lack of direction, and negative influences had led him to a life on the margins of society.

As the presentation concluded, Pastor Providence stepped out of character and delivered a heartfelt appeal to the young men. He urged them to honour their parents, teachers, mentors, and community members who care about their well-being and invest in their future.

“Stay in school, stay away from drugs, stay away from gang violence, and appreciate the people who are working hard to see you succeed,” was the central message shared with the students.

Throughout the morning, the atmosphere was one of engagement, reflection, and encouragement. Students participated attentively and responded positively to the practical lessons presented.

The conference forms part of a broader initiative by the North Leeward District of Seventh-day Adventist, SVG Mission aimed at mentoring and empowering young men throughout the island.

The event concluded with a renewed determination among participants to make better choices, pursue their education, and grow into productive citizens capable of making meaningful contributions to their families, schools, and communities.
