- North Leeward Technical Institute Opens
Speaking at the opening of the North Leeward Technical Institute on Monday, MP Carlos James stated that the institute is not a just building, but a hub for learning that falls under the umbrella of education and employment creation.
“It’s really about creating opportunities and a space for learning, particularly for our young men and women, those who are on the blocks, those who are home, and those who may not have had the opportunity for further advancement in education. For some reason or another, they have slipped through the educational dragnet in terms of advancing in learning, and we have provided that space for them.”
James stated that his responsibility was to oversee the project’s implementation since, aside from education and training, the transformational activities that are taking place and will take place in North Leeward are all part of establishing a rural constituency with commerce to contribute to the economy.
“These things won’t happen overnight. It’s about patience, a calm and great leadership vision, clarity, and a sense of purpose, and working with the community to ensure that all of the supporting mechanisms are in place. And we do these things with hard work, dedication, and determination. And I’m really happy that this came to fruition, and the institute is going to serve in the widest possible form for all of North Leeward.”
According to James, the government evaluated the entire notion of schooling and TVET education and determined that there was a definite demand and need.
”It’s a feeding ground for skilled people to acquire further skills. Initially, when we started this facility, even the technical personnel were saying, We may not be ready to do CVQ, but today I can say it is being offered.”
According to James, the institute would serve as a training hub for the tourism and hospitality industries.
“I’m going to link this facility with all the facilities, but specifically this facility with a lot of the hotels, so when persons come to NL Technical Institute automatically, they will move into internship programmes at hotels, but also with getting employment.”
