Official Launching of Police Week 2018

On Sunday May 27, 2018, hundreds of Police Officers attended church services throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines to official launch Police Week of Activities 2018.

The lawmen and women worshipped at the Evangelical Church in Barrouallie, The Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Campden Park, Streams of Power in Sion Hill, The Church of the Ascension in Sion Hill, the Glen Baptist Church in Calliaqua and New Life Ministries Church in New Grounds.

In delivering brief remarks at the Church of the Ascension, Acting Commissioner of Police Mr. Colin John stated that his contingent were very happy to be worshipping with the congregation.

The Commissioner echoed Sir Robert Peel’s, the father of modern Policing refrain “The Police is the Public and the Public is the Police”. Commissioner John also used the opportunity to covet the prayers of the church for police officers and their families, in order to fulfill the mammoth task of policing SVG.

In referencing the Psalmist David in Psalm 127, the Commissioner stated that ‘unless the Lord keeps the city, the watchman (in this case, the Police) watches in vain”.

The Commissioner stressed that the Police Week of Activities is very public focused and he went on to outline the number of activities that the police force will embark upon during the week which includes:

 

Monday May 28, 2018: Community Outreach Projects

  1. 1. Refurbishing the community bath and mural painting in Redemption

    Sharpes

  1. 2. Erecting two (2) goal posts at the Ottley Hall Playing Field
  1. 3. Donation of over 10 food baskets to the needy in different police districts
  1. 4. Free Haircuts and eyebrow shaving and free breakfast at Central Police

    Station

  1. 5. Beach cleanups on the windward and leeward side of the country in

    conjunction with CWSA.

Tuesday May 29, 2018: Police Debating Competition 

Should marijuana be decriminalized for medicinal and recreational use?” The completion will kick off at 7:00 pm at the Calliaqua Town Hall. The Police Band will be on hand to entertain the patrons. The winner of the debate completion will received the coveted COP Trophy and $ 500; second place will receive the DCP Trophy and $300 while the third place will receive the ACP Trophy and $200. Each competitor will also be issued with certificates of participation. Members of the general public are invited to attend.

Wednesday May 30, 2018:  Lecture on Leadership and Management

Mr. Joel Providence, Managing Director of Corea’s/Hazell’s Inc will deliver this lecture at the Old Montrose Police Lecture Hall commencing at 6:00 pm

Thursday May 31, 2018: Cricket and Soccer Finals

The cricket and soccer finals will take place at the Arnos Vale Playing Field and will see SVG Coast Guard taking on Administration in the Football finals and Operations taking on Eastern Division in Cricket finals.

Friday June 1, 2018: Sports Day

The sports day will be at the Arnos Vale Playing Field commencing at 9:00 am. The six divisions will compete against one another in several races including the 100M, 200M, Egg in Spoon and Late for work race among others. The Late for work race is one where several pieces of the officer’s uniform will be placed at different locations throughout the race and the officer has to put on these pieces of uniform even while running. The COP will be at the finishing line to inspect the persons who reaches there and if you are not properly attired you have to start the race all over again. So even if you reaches the finish line first, it does not mean that you win the race.

The divisions will be competing for the Hon. Prime Minister’s Trophy for 1st place, the Hon. Minister of Sports trophy for 2nd place and the PS/ National Security Trophy for 3rd place. Prior to the commencement of the sporting activities, there will be a 5K Road Relay staring from 7:00 am and will end at the Arnos Vale Playing Field.

 

Saturday June 2, 2018: Prize Giving Ceremony and “Night of Entertainment” 

This event will be held under the auspices of Dr. Hon. Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security. It commences at 6:00 pm at the Police Canteen. The winners of the all of the sporting disciplines will receive their prizes and trophies. Then there will be a night of entertainment and games evening with the Police Band, Police entertainers and other local entertainers.

 

Sunday June 3, 3018: Handing over of Community Bath to Residents of Sharpes 

This event will commence at 4:30 pm. prior to the handing over ceremony, there will be a friendly football match between a Commissioner of Police 11 and a Sharpes 11 at the Sharpes Playing Field commencing at 3:00 pm. The Police Band will also entertain the audience with a concert.

Donation of Appliances                  

President of the Ex-Police Association of New York, Retired Inspector of Police, Mr. Arden Tannis will on behalf of his organization donate a quantity of Stoves, Microwaves and Kettles to Commissioner of Police, Mr. Colin John on behalf of the Police Welfare Association. The ceremony will take place at Central Police Station on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 10:00 am.
