The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) issued a formal statement today to address and correct reports currently circulating in the media regarding the status of the nation’s leadership.
The OPM clarified that Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Godwin Friday is currently in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and is actively performing the full duties and responsibilities of his office. This includes oversight of all ministerial portfolios currently assigned to him.
The press release emphasized that the functions of the Prime Minister are only delegated when the Prime Minister is outside the State. Under these specific circumstances, official protocols for acting leadership are followed:
- Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Major St. Clair Leacock typically exercises the functions of the Prime Minister in an acting capacity when the Prime Minister is away.
- Hon. Daniel Cummings has also served as Acting Prime Minister during periods when both the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister were out of the State.
The Office of the Prime Minister reiterated that because Dr. Friday is presently in the country, he continues to perform the full functions of his Office, contrary to reports.
