Leader of the Opposition Ralph Gonsalves has launched a scathing critique of the current New Democratic Party (NDP) administration’s economic policies, branding their approach as the “Fiscal Austerity Retrogressive Transition” program.
Speaking on a recent radio broadcast, Gonsalves accused the NDP of stealthily rolling out this punishing economic agenda, which he mockingly refers to by its acronym, before even formally announcing it to the public. He broke down the components of the program to explain his strong opposition to the government’s strategy:
- Fiscal Austerity: Gonsalves condemned the central government’s focus on austerity, calling it a “wrong and dangerous idea”. He alleged that the current administration is attempting to “balance the books on the backs of the poor and the working people and the farmers”.
- Retrogressive Transition: Rejecting any optimistic framing of the government’s policies, Gonsalves warned that their economic plan is a “transition to a dead end”. He emphasized that the transition is moving the country backward rather than forward, noting, “It ain’t a transition to at the end of the storm there’s a golden sky”.
Gonsalves said that the painful effects of this program are already being felt nationwide as citizens grapple with severe economic pressure. He painted a grim picture of the current national mood, stating that people are “balling like cattle” due to the financial squeeze.
Ironically, according to Gonsalves, these economic hardships are being felt acutely in the very constituencies that heavily supported the NDP during the recent elections.
He specifically highlighted that working-class people in NDP strongholds like West St. George, East St. George, and the Grenadines are currently facing “real real problems” making ends meet under the weight of the government’s new policies.
