OWIA RESIDENT CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE OFFENCES
On August 6, 2026, police arrested and charged Deroy Nero, a 46-year-old resident of Owia, with two counts of resisting arrest, two counts of assault, one count of wounding, and one count of theft.
According to investigations, on August 6, 2026, the accused:
- Resisted the arrest of a police officer by pulling away his hand, he being a police officer acting in the due execution of his duty.
- Resisted the arrest of another police officer by pulling away his hand, he being a police officer acting in the due execution of his duty.
- Assaulted a 43-year-old police officer of Fairbairn Pasture by raising an empty Carib bottle to his face with the intent to commit the offence of wounding.
- Assaulted a 31-year-old police officer of Georgetown by raising an empty Carib bottle at him with the intent to commit the offence of wounding.
- Unlawfully and maliciously wounded a 31-year-old police officer of Georgetown by cutting him on his right hand with a piece of a Carib bottle.
He was further charged with stealing one (1) brown-handle cutlass valued at $45.00 ECC and a quantity of sweet peppers valued at $350.00 ECC, bringing the total value of the stolen items to $395.00 ECC. The items were the property of a 58-year-old farmer of Owia.
The theft offence was committed on August 5, 2026, in Owia.
Nero appeared before the Mesopotamia Magistrate Court on August 7, 2026, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges. The presiding Magistrate ordered that he be admitted to the Mental Health Center for a two-week evaluation. The matters were adjourned and transferred to the Georgetown Magistrate Court for August 24, 2026.
