Substitute Ferran Torres scored the game’s only goal in the 106th minute, pouncing on a bouncing ball in the box to fire a left-footed shot under the crossbar during the second period of extra time.
Spain was dominant throughout the contest, recording 15 shots and nine corners during regulation while Argentina recorded none.
Argentina was forced to play the final period with 10 men after Enzo Fernandez received a red card in second-half stoppage time for a reckless foul on Pau Cubarsi.
Despite the constant pressure, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez kept the game scoreless through 90 minutes by making a record-breaking 10 saves.
The victory makes Spain the first country to hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup crowns simultaneously.
