Press Release Via News784

From Tuesday, July 3rd, 2018 Massy Stores will be introducing a charge of twenty-five (25) cents for Massy branded, single-use plastic bag, which are currently being used to pack groceries at our stores.

The sole purpose is to change customer behavior toward the more frequent use of reusable bags.

All this is intended to support our journey of waste reduction, specifically the reduction of the negative impacts of plastic waste in the environment.

We wish to take this opportunity to reminder you about what to expect when the charge is introduced:

  • The charge will be applied for each single use carry out bag provided by Massy Stores in the packaging of your groceries, in the event that you do not have or opt to use a reusable bag.

o       Your reusable bag does not have to be a Massy Bag

o       Any bag will do

o       The intention remains that we all will take personal responsibility for the overall reduction of plastic consumption.

Tip: keep a stash of reusable bag in your vehicle and or on you which may help you in ensuring that you always have a reusable bag on hand.

  • Please bring sufficient bags to shop.

Tip: Bring separate bags for grocery items such as fruits and vegetables, meats and seafood and household/cleaning items.

  • The branded, single-use bags are not for sale as individual grocery items as we are not in the business of selling plastic bags. These bags are available for sale ONLY where you opt to have your groceries packaged in plastic.
  • Where you choose to have your groceries packed in plastic bags (although we hope you won’t) the proceeds from the sale of these plastic bags will be placed into an Environmental Fund to support environmental projects focused on managing the effects of plastic pollution.
  • There will be some instances where we will continue to provide you with clear plastic bags free of charge. You will receive a free plastic bag if this is necessary to protect loose foodstuffs (produce, vegetables) from dirt and pathogens and prevent seepage from raw fish, raw meat, or raw poultry which could lead to cross contamination.

We look forward to your cooperation in our collective effort to manage plastic waste and reduce negative impact on your natural environment. We also welcome your feedback in these efforts.
